Heritage New Zealand: Register Records
The Register of historic places, historic areas, wahi tapu and wahi tapu areas (Rarangi Taonga) identifies New Zealand’s significant and valued historical and cultural heritage places. It is established under the Historic Places Act 1993 and is maintained by Heritage New Zealand. Its size, scale and national focus make the Register one of the most important historical information resources in New Zealand.
Severe damage to heritage fabric caused by the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 has meant unprecedented, rapid loss of registered items, particularly in Christchurch, Waimakariri and Selwyn districts. Many places have been removed from the Heritage New Zealand Register following the earthquakes.
Records relating to these historic places are available on Heritage New Zealand's Earthquake Collection. These records include original Building Field Record Forms, Registration Reports and reports exported from Heritage New Zealand's Register database.
Further information on these places is available at Heritage New Zealand's Southern Region Office. Please note that property ownership details have been removed from these records to respect individual privacy.
