Thousands of contracts were drawn up and signed throughout the life of CERA - for employment, purchasing services and organising demolition and construction. Lessons have been identified for future disaster recovery including the challenges of government procurement rules when timeliness is crucial, having appropriate contract management software and ensuring there are specialist staff for specialist contracts.

- Demolitions and Operations: An overview of the CERA Operations team

- Formed in late March 2011, the Operations team managed the structural demolition work in the central business district red zone, residential red zone and Port Hills red zone. Identifying unstable buildings and hazards was prioritised so the recovery of these areas could begin. Whilst being responsible for management, security and reduction of all red zone cordons in the city, the team also oversaw land clearance and disposal of debris and hazardous material.

On 4 September 2010, people in Canterbury were shaken from their beds by a major earthquake. This report tells the story of the University of Canterbury (UC), its staff and its students, as they rose to the many challenges presented by the earthquake.
This report however, is intended to do more than just acknowledge their hard work and determination; it also critically reflects on the things that worked well and the aspects of the response that, in hindsight, could have been done better.
